No matter how we emphasize it, it's a quiet, strong, extraordinary 9 words in a short psalm toward the end of the book.

weakness & strength

Judges 6: 11 Then the angel of the LORD came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites.12 The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, "Mighty hero, the LORD is with you!"
13 "Sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn't they say, 'The LORD brought us up out of Egypt'? But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites."
14 Then the LORD turned to him and said, "Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!"
15 "But Lord," Gideon replied, "how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!"
16 The LORD said to him, "I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man."

Here we've got another conversation like the conversation God had with Moses & the burning bush...
God saying, "do this" & the person He's speaking with basically saying, "but God... how!"
And God says 5 words: "I will be with you."

God said some interesting things here.

When Gideon asked how he could do what God asked him to do, Gideon said his family was the weakest his tribe & he was the weakest in the clan. Iow, Gideon thought of himself as the lowest on the totem pole of life.

God was undaunted. He just said, "Go in the strength that you have." & "I'm sending you."

And when Gideon did his, "but, God...!" again, God made the earth shaking response: "I will be with you."

I feel like Gideon this morning. In about 7 hours we're gonna be having our 1st pre-kickoff get-together for the Sunday Morning Gathering at The Warehouse.

I have no illusions - I know what I'm getting myself into here.

Like Gideon, I feel like the weakest of the weak this morning.

But as I read Judges 6 this morning, I feel like God is saying to me what He said to Gideon:

"Go in the strength that you have..."
Iow, do what I say with who you are; with who I made you.

"I am sending you."
You're not doing this because you woke up one morning & decided it would be cool to have a Sunday Morning Gathering. That ain't your idea - it's Mine.

"I will be with you."
Iow, I got you covered.
I precede & follow you.
I'm out ahead of you, preparing the way, while mopping up behind you.
Me, the God of the universes, Who keeps the galaxies from bumping into each other, am gonna give you (less than a nano-speck in the cosmos) my personal attention by being with you every step of the way.

You may say it was a coincidence that I read that this morning.

I've been getting up to read the Bible & listen every morning since January of 2003.

Because of what I've experienced with God showing up to say the right thing in His Word at the right time in the right way at the right time...

I don't believe in "coincidence" anymore.

So, I guess I need to take a big breath, put on my big boy boxers, & go to it...

light & dark

1 John 1:5 God is light, & in Him is no darkness at all.

What's the "darkness" that each of us has in our lives?The essence of who God is light. His presence in our life chases away the darkness.

This isn't just metaphorical. Anyone had the darkness of depression besides me? Daily contact with our Abba can chase that darkness away. I've experienced it, more than once.

What's your darkness?

Make contact with Him & let His light fill up that dark place.

There are people in my life who frustrate or just simply drive me crazy. I don't understand why they can't see the stupidity of their actions, the self-centeredness of their lives, the counter-productiveness of their choices, or the harm all these things do to the people around them.

And I wonder sometimes why the people who have more influence or authority with these irksome individuals don't call their hands on their thinking or actions.

But I have to remember that I'm not in charge here. God is. Sometimes it's usually not my place to police the behavior of others, or stand in a place of correction.

Sometimes it's a waste of my time to try to alter the actions of others. Not everyone I know thinks wisdom & truth fairly drip from my mouth! ;-)

And sometimes I don't see the big picture. There's more going on than I know, or need to know.

And finally, sometimes I have other things that need to command my attention than the inappropriate actions of others.

Is this easy for me?

Nope.

It also helps to remember that I'm that irritating or frustrating person for others.

I've dated verse 2 in my Bible on 12.29.06. That means that on that date, it seemed that was a promise God made me.

That was in the middle of some really dark days for me. It seemed impossible that that could come true.

It's interesting the season that I find myself in now, just 2 1/2 years later.

These are the last written words of Paul, written to his adopted son. I know all about adopted sons. ;-)

There's so many poignant, personal things included in these few lines.

I wonder if I was writing what I knew was the last letter I would ever write to him, what I would say to my adopted sons & daughters, as well as my wife & daughter, or my dear friends, or anyone I had contact & influence with?

transition

2 Timothy 1: 14 Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.

Here's what my Life Application Bible says about this verse...

"Timothy was in a time of transition. He had been Paul's bright, young helper; soon he would be on his own as a leader of a church in a different environment. Although his responsibilities were changing, Timothy was not without help. He has everything he needed to face the future if he would holf on tightly to God's resources.

"When you are facing difficult transitions, it is good to follow Paul's advice to Timothy & look back on your experience.

"Who is the foundation of your faith?

"How can you build on that foundation?

"What gifts has the Holy Spirit given you?

"Use the gifts you have already been given."

I believe I underlined that part of this footnote a couple of years ago. Interesting that this verse came up off the page right now, as I'm facing trainsition into who knows what downtown.

too sinful

1 Timothy 1:12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him, 13 even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. 14 Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.

Some think their sins & sinfulness is too great for God to forgive & forget.

Nope.

Not possible.

Good to know for ourselves, even better to know for friends , acquaintences, or anyone we encounter.

Promises I believe God gave me about downtown back in August, 2008...

Joshua 1:1-9 After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses' assistant:
"Moses my servant is dead.

Get going

Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I'm giving to the People of Israel.

I'm giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on
— just as I promised Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon east to the Great River, the Euphrates River—all the Hittite country—and then west to the Great Sea. It's all yours.

All your life, no one will be able to hold out against you

In the same way I was with Moses, I'll be with you.
