7 "When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say,
'Come in and eat with me'?
8 No,
he says, 'Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat.
Then you can eat later.'
9 And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do?
Of course not.
10 In the same way, when you obey me you should say,
'We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.'"
This is Jesus talking in this passage here.
I have learned a whole lot about servanthood in the last 7 years.
It ain't like we think it is.
We here in America have a very strong sense of entitlement when it comes to serving & being a servant.
We have something of an attitude that God should feel lucky to have us.
And we should be filled in on all the who, what, where, when, & how of whatever act of service He requires.
Nothing could be further from the concept of what Jesus thinks a servant is.
Servants serve.
They seldom get to know the who, what, where, when, & how of what they are doing.
We don't get an explanation.
We simply obey.
We do the job required, or be the person mandated to be.
We serve.
Anyone who says in some sanguine tone, "All I want to be is a servant of the Lord" has never been one.
It's demanding.
humbling,
and costly.
But remember, we are serving the God of the universes, high, holy, omnipotent, eternal, & Who is the every essence of love - whose personhood is infinitely beyond our comprehension.
That's Who we serve.
Think about it...
