true servanthood

We have such a glamorous view of what "being a servant of the Lord" is.

We can bet that when we hear someone say in some sanguine manner, "all I want is to be a servant of the Lord" - they've never been one.

Here's the picture of servanthood Jesus gave.

It's not glamorous.

It's not guaranteed with success.

It's not appreciated sometimes.

It's not the heady, exhilarating thing many preachers, missionaries, or the such would have us think it is.

Luke 17

“When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep,

does his master say,

‘Come in and eat with me’?

No,

he says,

‘Prepare my meal,

put on your apron,

and serve me while I eat.

Then you can eat later.’

And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do?

Of course not.

10 In the same way,

when you obey me you should say,

‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’”
