These 2 verses are a part of what John recorded as what Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Jesus was praying there just maybe an hour or so before He was arrested.
In the 19 verses prior to these, Jesus basically was praying for the disciples.
But then He turns His thoughts toward us.
Yes, that's right - a short time before He knew He would be arrested, Jesus was praying for us.
iow, 2000+ years ago, right before what Jesus knew would be a horrendous ordeal, He was thinking about us - you & me.
Here's what He prayed...
********
John 17
20 “I am praying not only for these disciples
but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.
21 I pray that they will all be one,
just as you and I are one;
as you are in me, Father,
and I am in you.
And may they be in us
so that the world will believe you sent me.
