nailed it

Then (Jesus) said,

"You reject God's laws in order to hold onto your own traditions."

Mark 7:9 (NLT, 1st ed.)

This comment came from Jesus was talking to the Pharisees about inner purity.

The Pharisees were the leaders of the religious order among the Jews.

They were supposedly the living examples of what following Jewish law should look like.

They were also the tacit authenticators of all things holy.

Needless to say, they had decayed into something far less than that.

Jesus called them "whited sepulchers" - white on the outside, dead & decaying on the inside. (Matthew 23:27)

I think Jesus would say the same thing to the present day leaders of our religion.
