John 1
5 I
am writing to remind you that we should love one another.
This
is not a new commandment,
but
one we have had from the beginning.
6 Love
means doing what God has commanded us,
and
he has commanded us to love one another,
just
as you heard from the beginning.
I
wonder when we forgot that our central responsibility is to love.
We
used to be identified as people who love.
Not
people who hate.
Or
people who judge.
Or
people compelled by bigotry.
Or
a plethora of other things.
Was
it when we went whoring for political power & influence?
Maybe
it was when we started feeling like we were the ones with a corner on
the market for morality, or a higher quality of rightness?
Or
was it when we got so well off – you know, middle class?
Or
could it have been when we just became so prissy & precious in
our affluence that all we thought about was ourselves – iow, self
centered & self absorbed.
Or
is it just a combination of them all?
Whatever
is the case, we continue to miss the mark.
Love
is no longer our hallmark.
But
it still remains our primary responsibility.
In
a country, and a world, that has gone bat poop crazy, we are called
to be carriers & expressers of God's love for & to all.
I
wonder what sort of calamity or tragedy will it take for us to wake
up?
I
fear we are fixin' to find out...
