greater & less

John 3:30 He must become greater & greater, & I must become less & less.

These are the words spoken by John the Baptist when his disciples were asking about Jesus as Messiah and Jesus' increasing ministry.

I've heard plenty of sermons using this verse. Most of them talk about humbling ourselves.

I've wondered if it's simply more practical than that.

It would make sense to me that as we spend time with Him & get to know Him, we would want more & more of Jesus' personality to come out in our lives than our personalities, which are tainted & warped by sin.

It would make sense that we would want the identity & essence of Jesus, the Savior, perfect, holy, the evry essence of love, to be expressed through us, rather than our own self-centered, self-absorbed identities.
