Matthew 22

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again.

35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question:

36 "Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?"

  37 Jesus replied,

"'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart,

all your soul,

and all your mind.'

38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

39 A second is equally important:

'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments."

I wonder what went through the minds of those Pharisees when Jesus replied to their question?

Jesus boiled it all down to four words.

Love God, love others.

I'm sure the "expert in religious law" knew the enormity of what Jesus had just said.

That is, unless his heart was so clouded by the enormity of his own sin that he missed it.

I am embarrassed to tell how many times in my own life the enormity of my own sin has done the same thing.

And needless to say I see it in others all the time - I guess it really does "take one to know one"? ;-) LOL

But can you imagine what the Pharisee was expecting?

Maybe they thought they'd get some sort of long winded discourse from Jesus on some part of the law, which they could debate with Jesus, or scrutinize, or try to refute.

It's probably certainly was any one of them would have offered if asked that question.

But that wasn't what Jesus did - He cut to the chase, went to the meat of the matter, & probably rolled their socks down in the process, providing they were wearing socks ;-) LOL

Love God, love others.
